APHA is introducing a new feature to its long-established Breeders’ Trust program—the Breeders’ Futurity. Commencing in 2009, it features a select slate of classes to showcase the offspring of Breeders’ Trust subscribed stallions and nominated mares bred to these stallions.
The inaugural Breeders’ Futurity will be held in conjunction with the 2009 APHA Fall Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. Its purpose is to support the Breeders’ Trust program by increasing opportunities and financial rewards for Breeders’ Trust foals. The 2009 foals of nominated stallions and mares will be eligible for weanling competition in 2009.
The slate of classes offered in subsequent years will grow right along with them: in 2010, yearling halter, longe line and in-hand trail will be added; in 2011, 2-year-old performance classes; an in 2012, 3-year-old performance classes. (Click here to see tentative class lists pdf.)
Instead of financial rewards linked to APHA points, as in the regular Breeders’ Trust, the Futurity will pay back 95 percent of the purse to the foal owner/lessee and 5 percent to the mare nominator in the gold, silver and bronze divisions. The current Breeders’ Trust brochure outlines eligibility, fees and payback schedules.
Competition will be offered in four divisions (pdf):
- Gold, for Regular Registry offspring of Breeders’ Trust-subscribed stallions whose breeding fees are at or above the Breeders’ Trust Private Treaty fee (currently $700);
- Silver, for Regular Registry offspring of Breeders’ Trust-subscribed stallions whose breeding fees are lower than the Breeders’ Trust Private Treaty fee;
- Bronze, for Solid Paint-Bred offspring of all Gold and Silver Breeders’ Trust-subscribed stallions, regardless of stud fee;
- and Platinum, which is a program unto itself. The Platinum division Breeders’ Futurity is an elite weanling halter futurity for Regular Registry offspring. Foals are made eligible for this division by their sire’s owner, who must pay a $100 nomination for every mare listed on the Stallion Breeding Report. These foals are also eligible to enter the Gold or Silver division.
