FORT WORTH, Texas—Carl Thurow of Wichita, Kan., was recently re-elected to his fourth term serving on the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) executive committee. His re-election came during the association’s recent Annual Convention and Membership meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

APHA is one of the largest and fastest-growing horse breed organizations in the world, registering new horses at a rate of 40,000 per year. The association currently includes 100,000 members, and has registered 900,000 horses in the past 44 years.

Thurow will continue to serve on the executive committee as president-elect for 2007, advancing to president the following year. He joined six other longtime APHA members to make up the newly-elected committee. This governing body sets APHA policy worldwide and is responsible for the association’s activities and fiscal integrity.

Thurow has served APHA for more than 25 years and has remained involved in many aspects of the organization. In addition to his executive committee responsibilities, he enjoys participating in APHA trail rides. He is also an integral part of the association’s growing working ranch horse competition, which spotlights the practical skills of Paint Horses on ranches across America.

Thurow is no stranger to competition. He raised the 1988 stallion, Ratchetts Parr, who ranks among the top horses in the breed. Over the years, Thurow’s prized stallion became an APHA World Champion Halter Stallion, APHA Reserve World Champion in Western Riding and an APHA Reserve World Champion in Working Cow Horse. Thurow’s talented stallion also earned APHA Champion and APHA Superior All-around Champion titles.

One of Thurow’s favorite parts of serving on the executive committee is the opportunity to work with several other people who strive continuously to better the association.

“Executive committee members all bring many different strengths to the table,” he said. “One of our challenges is to provide an event, competition or activity that will give every member the opportunity to showcase their American Paint Horse.”

Thurow joins an executive committee that includes President Richard Cox of Knightstown, Ind.; Vice President John Corbin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Senior Committee Member Linda Vance of Winlock, Wash.; Fifth Committee Member Dr. Travis Titlow of Lincoln, Calif.; Sixth Committee Member Scot Jackson of Stephenville, Texas; and Immediate Past President Carl Parker of Marriott-Slaterville, Utah.
