‘Ride for the Brand’ with APHA’s new President

FORT WORTH, TEXAS—Carl Thurow of Wichita, Kan., was recently elected president of the one of the world’s largest and most popular horse breed organizations—the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). As president, Thurow will work with APHA’s Executive Committee to set APHA policy and uphold the association’s activities and fiscal integrity.

Although the new president has previously held several offices on APHA’s executive committee and spent 25 years as a director of the organization, he has never forgotten his ranching roots. In fact, you’re more likely to find him saddling up for a charity trail ride or working behind the scenes at a horse show than sitting in a board room.

“Carl is the kind of person who leads by example,” said APHA Executive Director Lex Smurthwaite. “Carl wants to see projects succeed, and he’ll pitch in to help wherever assistance is needed.”

Leading by example is exactly what Thurow plans to do during his term as APHA President. He will be joined by President-Elect John Corbin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Vice President Linda Vance of Winlock, Wash., Senior Committee Member Dr. Travis Titlow of Lincoln, Calif., Fifth Committee Member Scot Jackson of Stephenville, Texas, Sixth Committee Member Gregg Reisinger of Eldora, Iowa, and Immediate Past President Richard Cox of Knightstown, Ind., on the association’s executive committee.

“At APHA,” said Thurow, “we ride for the brand. That goes back a long way in our ranching heritage. When someone signed on to work for a ranch, that’s who they rode for. They did whatever it took to support the ranch that carried the brand.

“That’s how I feel about my role at APHA—I ride for the brand. And, I welcome others to ride along with me.”
