AJPHA Judging Contest expected to draw 100 teams

FORT WORTH, Texas—Youth from across the nation will compete in the 2000 American Junior Paint Horse Association's (AJPHA) World Championship Judging Contest on Saturday, July 1, in the Will Rogers Coliseum at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Held in conjunction with the World Championship Paint Horse Show, June 26-July 8, the contest is open to 100 FFA, 4-H, AJPHA and other youth teams. For the third year, Hart Trailers of Chickasha, Oklahoma, is sponsoring the competition. Through monetary support, Hart helps the AJPHA provide judging contest winners with plaques, buckles and other prizes in recognition of their accomplishments.

"Our judging contests get better every year," said contest coordinator Shanna Weaver. "Thanks to all the people who are dedicated to AJPHA youth and work behind the scenes, this judging contest will be one of the most successful and fun events for the youth.

"We are also lucky enough to have a great selection of high-quality horses for contestants to evaluate."

The four-member teams compete in two divisions: Junior, aged 13 years and younger, and Senior, aged 14 to 19. Contestants may enter as a member of an age division or as part of a Paint Horse club team. Members of a Paint Horse club team must be a member of that club.

Youth entered in this event judge four halter and four performance classes. Contest officials choose performance classes that may include Hunt Seat Equitation, Horsemanship, Hunter Hack, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship, Western Pleasure or Western Riding. Contestants evaluate four horses in each class.

Participants have 15 minutes to place each class and mark their placings card. When the youth have finished judging all eight classes, a panel of judges reviews the placings and hears oral presentations by each youth. This "reasons" section gives contestants two minutes to tell an experienced equine judge why they placed the class in a particular order.

Junior division teams give one set of reasons, evaluating a halter class. The Senior division gives three sets, one evaluating a halter class and two evaluating a performance class.

Judges score participants on how they place each class and how they present each set of oral reasons. Scoring is based on a point system, with 50 points possible for both class placings and reasons.

All participants are then invited to attend the AJPHA Judging Contest Awards Breakfast, held in the Round Up Inn on Sunday morning. There, Anthony and Kay Hart of Hart Trailers, will present awards to the Junior and Senior teams and to individuals earning the highest scores. Second- through fifth-place winners in each of the categories will also receive awards.
