Strong market for APHA World Showcase Sales

FORT WORTH, TEXAS-Beautiful Paint Horses sold fast and furiously at the recent American Paint Horse Association (APHA) World Showcase Sales. Held July 1-2 at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the sales featured 142 of the highest-quality Paint Horses on the market. The event was held in conjunction with the World Championship Paint Horse Show.

Starting Saturday, July 1, at noon, the Gelding Session averaged $7,022 per horse. Bringing a total of $189,600, 27 geldings sold through the ring. The average price of the 10 highest-selling geldings was $13,050.

Lot number 18, Indigo Blue, topped both the Gelding Session and the Mare and Stallion. Owned by Sara Simons of Aubrey, Texas, the 9-year-old black overo sold for $35,000. The gelding was purchased by Tom Allen of Kingston, Oklahoma.

Indigo Blue has accumulated more than 2,500 points in seven events. With Simons in the saddle, the gelding won the 1998 World Championship in Youth Hunt Seat Equitation, 1998 Reserve World Championship in Youth Hunter Under Saddle and the 2000 and 1998 Reserve World Championships in Youth Showmanship.

Results from the Mare and Stallion Session held the following day further indicated that the market for Paint Horses continues to hold strong. With an impressive 21-percent increase over 1999's total, the sale grossed $655,600.

Topping the sale was 7-year-old chestnut mare Awesome Sensation. Purchased by Tommy and Judy Ford of Las Vegas, Nevada, the mare sold for $33,000. Consigned by Brandon Perry of Ocala, Florida, Awesome Sensation is in foal to Kid Clu AQHA and has earned 125 halter points and a Superior in Open Halter.

Of the 95 horses that passed through the sale ring, 72 were sold, averaging $9,106. Prices were consistently strong, as the top 10 horses sold for an average of $23,010.

Another mare that attracted the buyers' attention was Strait Texas Win, who brought the sale's second-highest price. By Strait From Texas, the black tobiano yearling filly sold for $30,750 to Shane and Robin Robison of Boulder, Utah. The Robisons went home with five sale horses, investing close to $100,000 in working cow horses, cutters and reiners.

In addition to Strait Texas Win, they purchased the high-selling stallion, Mr Midnight Ryder, for $26,000. The 1995 black tobiano won the 1999 World Championship in Junior Steer Stopping and has earned 321 points in four performance events.

Half A Million Goes for $10,000
During the Mare and Stallion Session, the APHA auctioned off registration number 500,000 and the name Half A Million to benefit the American Paint Horse Heritage Foundation. Legendary Paint Horse breeder Floyd Moore of Huntsville, Texas, purchased the package for $10,000.

As the high-bidder, Moore will receive a specially designed plaque bearing the photograph and registration certificate of his designated horse, a duplicate plaque permanently displayed at the APHA headquarters, a custom-monogrammed blanket from BMB Tack, a custom-designed Gist Silversmiths buckle, and a year's supply of Strongid® C donated by Pfizer Animal Health.
