More than 200 competitors from around the nation to visit Fort Worth
Students from 16 universities to pack Will Rogers Memorial Center for APHA horse judging contest

FORT WORTH, Texas-The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) will host more than 200 equine students from 16 universities and junior colleges around the nation for the 2001 APHA Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes. The event will be held Saturday, April 21, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center's W.R. Watt Arena, in Fort Worth, Texas.

APHA introduced the program last year to help students gain first-hand experience in using the knowledge they've obtained in the classroom to judge horses in the show ring. The students will judge 10 horse show classes typically included in equine competition. Horses will be shown in five halter classes, where they will be judged on their physical appearance and structure, and in five performance classes-Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Reining, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation.

"This is an excellent opportunity for us to allow students to gain practical experience in their fields of study," said APHA Director of Shows Tina Anderson. "It is also a unique opportunity for them to judge and view some of the top horses in our breed.

"Our involvement in this event gives us a chance to expand on what these students are learning in the college classroom, and at the same time, introduce ourselves to future leaders at college campuses around the country."

Anderson explained that students will actually compete against one another at the event and will themselves be judged by APHA officials on their ability to evaluate the equine classes. Scores will be given for how closely a student's placing of horses matches that of an APHA judging official's scoring. Students will also be critiqued on the oral arguments they must present in support of their placement decisions.

At a dinner reception, which takes place April 21, 7 p.m., at the American Paint Horse Association Heritage Center, awards will be presented to the top individuals and top junior and senior college teams.

Hart Trailer Manufacturing of Chickasha, Okla., is sponsoring the competition and reception.
