American Paint Horse Association offers valuable program

Students from 17 colleges get higher education at Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes

FORT WORTH, Texas-College students from around the nation got a higher education on judging horses at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes held April 17 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center's W.R. Watt Arena, in Fort Worth, Texas.

The APHA Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes offered unique opportunities for students to judge and view some of the top American Paint Horses in the registry.

APHA introduced the program recently to help students gain first-hand experience in using the knowledge they've obtained in the classroom to judge horses in the show ring.

The students judged 10 horse show classes typically included in equine competition. Horses were shown in four halter classes, where they were judged on their physical appearance and structure, and in six performance classes-Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Western Riding and Trail.

Students actually competed against one another at the event and were themselves judged by APHA officials on their ability to evaluate the equine classes. Scores were given for how closely a student's placing of horses matched that of an APHA judging official's scoring. Students were also critiqued on the oral arguments they were required to present in support of their placement decisions.

Dr. Tina Anderson, APHA director of shows, discussed the practical educational value that the APHA Intercollegiate Horse Judging Spring Sweepstakes offers students at colleges around the nation. Several media attended the event.

"We host this competition each year, because we want students involved in equine studies to gain practical experience, " said APHA Director of Shows Tina Anderson, Ph.D. "This is a unique opportunity for these students to judge and view some of the top horses in our breed.

As director of shows for the Fort Worth-based association, Anderson oversees more than 1,100 shows around the world that APHA approves.

"This educational outreach program gives the American Paint Horse Association a chance to introduce itself to future judges and tomorrow's leaders in the horse industry," Anderson added.

Hart Trailer Manufacturing of Chickasha, Okla., sponsored the competition and awards dinner.
