Carl Thurow of Ulysses, Kan., was elected to the executive committee
of the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) at the organization's
2003 Annual Convention, held recently in Milwaukee, Wisc.
Thurow is an equine appraiser and is an active American
Paint Horse exhibitor and breeder. He is currently involved
in cutting and working cow horse competition.
Thurow has owned several world champion Paint Horses, most
notably Ratchetts Parr, who was world champion halter stallion,
reserve world champion in Western riding, reserve world champion
in working cow horse and an APHA "Superior" all-around
champion.
"Paint Horses have made a big difference in my life,"
Thurow said, "and now, serving on the APHA executive
committee is a chance for me to give back to the breed and
the association. I am excited about APHA's future and look
forward to working with members."
No stranger to leadership positions in APHA, Thurow has served
as a national director from Kansas and has held many positions
with the Kansas Paint Horse Association. He has been an active
member of APHA for 24 years.
Thurow joins the executive committee at a time when the APHA
has achieved a record number of members, with nearly 107,000
people now active in the organization. Participation in many
APHA activities and programs has also increased, including
the World Championship Paint Horse Show, held annually in
Fort Worth, Texas. In 2003, APHA logged a record 4,695 entries
in that show, which included 1,800 horses over a 14-day period.
Since its formation in 1962, APHA has registered more than
743,000 horses in 43 nations around the world. APHA has been
registering new American Paint Horses at a rate of about 60,000
per year, making it one of the fastest-growing breed registries
in the world.
Thurow joins an executive committee that includes Tom Elliott
of Benson, Ariz.; Paul Reinbolt of Woodburn, Ky.; Carl Parker
of Marriott-Slaterville, Utah; Richard Cox of Knightstown,
Ind.; Alice Singleton of Mount Vernon, Ark., and Forrest Nelson
of Meeker, Colo.
